Overview
Sharjah Performing Arts Academy (SPAA) is a purpose-built performing arts academy in Sharjah University City, opened in 2019 as the first dedicated institution of its kind in the region. It combines higher-education programmes in acting, musical theatre, production arts, dance and music with world-class performance and rehearsal facilities, including a 432-seat main theatre, a 126-seat studio theatre, multiple studio performance spaces and specialised technical workshops.
For event organisers, SPAA offers a professional theatrical environment with built-in sound, lighting, rigging and backstage infrastructure designed to support full-scale productions, conferences, festivals and ceremonies, and it is significant enough to host global events such as World Stage Design 2025.
The campus is laid out around a central academy building that houses the main theatre, studio theatre, two fully equipped studio performance spaces, rehearsal studios, acting and dance studios, music practice rooms, recording facilities and an exhibition gallery, complemented by a café, dining hall, breakout spaces and student accommodation. Interiors typically feature contemporary finishes – polished floors, acoustic wall treatments, black-box and proscenium configurations, technical gantries, control rooms and flexible seating in some spaces – all designed to support professional-level production. The lighting is fully theatrical in key venues (grid-mounted fixtures, programmable lighting desks, production-grade sound and video), with architectural lighting in foyers and public areas that suits receptions and networking breaks. Overall, SPAA functions both as a conservatoire and as a multi-venue performance hub, making it attractive for conferences, award shows, festivals and creative industry events that need high-spec theatres, studios and support spaces on one campus.
